Dit is een nieuwsupdate over de door Wikileaks gelekte videobeelden uit Irak. In dit bericht: Al Jazeera, The New Yorker, Truthout, The Independent, The New York Times, The Guardian en anderen.
Het hele verhaal
Al Jazeera’s Inside Story bespreekt in ruim twintig minuten het hele verhaal.
De opmerkingen van Glenn Greenwald komen goed to the point:
“I think that the real value of [the release of this video] is that this happens in war, in all wars all the time. This is what war is. I think there’s a real value in having Americans who typically don’t see what our government is doing thousands of miles away in these countries, who are subjected to propaganda about how we’re spreading democracy and liberating people — I think there’s a real value in seeing the inhumanity and brutality of what that means, and being forced to confront it. And I think Americans typically don’t value [this]. [This video release by Wikileaks] triggers real important debates and discussion about what we’re really doing in the world.”
De vraag of het oorlogsrecht is geschonden in dit specifieke incident is niet de meest relevante, zegt Greenwald:
“Whatever opinions we might have about rules of engagement and whether these soldiers were acting correctly, the reality is that we’re leaving a trail of extreme anti-American sentiment and hatred. Exactly what fuelled the terrorism that we’re supposedly trying to combat (…).”
Niet de hele waarheid
The New Yorker wijst erop dat de video niet de hele waarheid van die dag vertelt, omdat de context ontbreekt, zoals altijd met videobeelden. Bovendien zet Wikileaks de beelden in een weinig objectief kader.
“By their nature images strip events of context: their powerful impact in part depends on narrowness, immediacy, and purity of form. And there’s a great deal that this video leaves out. It doesn’t tell you about the circumstances of the attack, how a few days earlier this neighborhood in eastern Baghdad had exploded in combat between American soldiers and Sadrist militiamen detonating hidden bombs and staging ambushes. It doesn’t tell you about the fighting going on near the street where a group of men, some of them armed, come into the Apaches’ view. It doesn’t tell you that the Apaches are providing support for infantrymen of the 2-16, in armored vehicles, who have been taking fire.”
“Stripped of much context and weighted with commentary, this video is both an important document of the war, courageously leaked after the military had steadily refused to release it, and, in its way, a propaganda film.”

Nog veel meer narigheid
Truthout heeft een uitgebreid verhaal waarin wordt aangetoond dat wat in de video te zien is, niet uitzonderlijk is. Rules of Engagement, ‘oorlogsregels’, stellen niks voor, aldus geciteerde soldaten. Een soldaat uit Irak doet zijn verhaal:
“During the course of my three tours, the rules of engagement changed a lot… The higher the threat the more viciously we were permitted and expected to respond. Something else we were encouraged to do, almost with a wink and nudge, was to carry ‘drop weapons’, or by my third tour, ‘drop shovels’. We would carry these weapons or shovels with us because if we accidentally shot a civilian, we could just toss the weapon on the body, and make them look like an insurgent.”

De psyche van de soldaten
The Independent heeft een verhaal over de enorme psychische last die soldaten en veteranen dragen. Het stuk besluit:
“Instead of rushing to defend military personnel accused of killing unarmed civilians, the Pentagon needs to review training and command structures which fail to identify combatants with serious psychological problems. In any conflict, soldiers have to be able to overcome the taboo against killing other humans. But this cockpit video is disturbing evidence that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are normalising violence.”
Ook de New York Times heeft een verhaal waarin psychologen het gedrag van de soldaten uitleggen:
“In recent days, many veterans have made the point that fighters cannot do their jobs without creating psychological distance from the enemy. One reason that the soldiers seemed as if they were playing a video game is that, in a morbid but necessary sense, they were.”
Het voornaamste punt van het stuk: oordelen vanachter een bureau over wat soldaten in een oorlogsgebied doen is onzin. Lees het hele verhaal bij de New York Times.
